A family portrait taken in Donnington Castle, Berkshire, close to where we live. Martyn did this shoot and he enjoyed working with the Vanzyls, a lovely family that drove up from Sevenoaks for the portrait. They wanted a country feel, making the most of the autumnal colours.

Here are a few favourites from a recent family portrait, we photographed Lana and Steve’s wedding in 2006 at Kew Gardens. They now have two lively boys. Alec’s portrait hangs on their wall, so when James came along, they didn’t want him to be left out…
I photograph portraits in the same way as weddings, using available light. I do own studio lights but find shooting agaisnt a white background quite sterile.
James was teething so I had to take the photographs during the moments when he was smiling. Lana commented on the fact that it didn’t look as if James was having a bad day!
I pay a lady to correct all the photographs for colour and contrast, as they look cold straight out of camera. It’s worth every penny as the colours jump out at you.
